Men: how to resolve common body image issues with laser hair removal

You could be forgiven for thinking it is only women who are body image conscious. After all, it’s us who are constantly bombarded with images of celebrities on the cover of glossy magazines looking like they have just stepped out of a salon (truth is, they most likely have!). But men? Surely they’re not that bothered? According to Dr David Giles of Winchester University, they most certainly are. Along with his colleague Jessica Close, 161 men were surveyed leading them to conclude that men who read glossy magazines were more likely to be influenced by the images contained within. According to Dr David Giles,  “Men and women increasingly get their ideas of what they should look like from imagery they see in the media”.

Whilst some of us wouldn’t mind looking like Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt, I think most people, and certainly those who come through my doors at my Bournemouth laser clinic, just want to improve on what they already have. Since the opening of Laser Skin Solutions in 2005 I have seen a huge increase in the number of male clients seeking laser hair removal, thread vein and acne treatment. Here are the most common male body issues I treat at my Bournemouth laser clinic, and what you can do about them:

Back and chest hair:

There seems to be a general consensus on back hair. And that is, nobody wants it. But the chest? Well that’s a matter of preference. The good news is that you can easily remove unwanted chest or back hair with permanent laser hair removal. It takes around 6 sessions, every couple of months or so, and yes it’s permanent.

Male bikini line:

It may surprise you to know that this is an increasingly popular treatment to have. Both men and women like their partners to have ‘neat and trim’ bikinis and the peri-anal area is an increasingly popular treatment requested at Laser Skin Solutions. Like with all laser hair removal treatments, around 6 sessions are needed in order to achieve the desired amount of permanent hair reduction.

Thread vein removal.

Broken veins and capillaries affect men and women alike. Smoking, drinking, sun exposure and hereditary factors all contribute to thread veins both on the face and legs. Some male clients even use their partners’ make up in order to try and cover them up. The good news? If you don’t like them, you don’t have to keep them. Thread vein removal is simple, quick and effective. Approximately 3 treatments are needed and can be done in a lunch break.

Acne:

Spots used to be a teenage a problem. Or at least that’s the way I remember it when I was young. Adult acne is on the rise and stress is thought to be a major cause of this. Products like benzoyl peroxide aim to kill the bacteria which cause acne, but products alone get limited results. Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is now considered the gold standard treatment by dermatologists for acne.
