At my Bournemouth laser clinic I often get asked: Are all hair colours suitable for laser hair removal?

Many laser clinics make claims that all hair colours can be permanently destroyed with laser and/or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment thereby achieving permanent hair removal. This is not true and clients should be wary of clinics making such claims. I often get asked at my Bournemouth laser clinic whether permanent hair removal is suitable for white hair. At Laser Skin Solutions Bournemouth we are very clear on hair colour and suitability for treatment. The answer to whether it is possible to have laser hair removal on white hair is a definite ‘No’. Laser hair removal has no doubt come on in leaps and bounds since the 1990’s. The very first laser hair removal system was the Ruby laser which, whilst effective, was very limited in terms of the hair and skin type it could treat. As technology advances it has become possible to treat lighter coloured hair and darker skin types. The rule of thumb however which I explain to clients at my laser clinic in Bournemouth is, ‘if the hair which you would like removed is lighter than your skin, then it will not be suitable for laser hair removal’.

Lasers and Intense Pulsed Light systems are attracted to the pigment (colour) in the hair, which it heats and as a result, destroys. If the hair is so light in colour, that there is more pigment in the skin (ie the skin is darker), then the laser light will heat the skin more than the hair. The reverse is required for laser hair removal. In order to achieve permanent hair reduction the hair must be heated to 70 degrees for a split second. This will only happen if the hair itself is darker than the skin.
