FAQS
There are different kinds of acne scars:
Acne scarring can sometimes develop as a complication of active acne.
Any type of acne can lead to acne scarring, but it’s more common as a result of having ‘acne vulgaris’ (inflamed white heads) or cystic acne.
There are different kinds of acne scars:
Boxcar scars: these present as round, oval or irregular shaped depressions (holes) or craters in the skin
Rolling (or atrophic) scars: these are caused by areas of scar tissue which form under the skin, making the surface of the skin look uneven.
Ice-pick scars: these tend to be smaller that boxcar scars, but go deeper into the skin. These scars look like tiny areas of skin have been gouged out – hence the name, ‘ice-pick’ scars.
Acne scarring in all its forms can cause people a lot of distress long after their active acne has gone. The good news is laser skin resurfacing can help both improve (and in some cases) almost completely resolve any acne scars.

FAQS
How does fractional laser for acne scarring work?
A laser beam is fragmented into tiny beams of light which penetrate into the dermis (the second layer of skin), to stimulate collagen production. At the same time it also resurfaces the upper layers of the epidermis (the top layer of skin), meaning you get significant collagen production creating a smooth, more even appearance to the skin.
Am I suitable for treatment?
A thorough consultation takes place to ensure suitability for treatment and a full medical questionnaire is undertaken. Due to possible pigment changes in the skin, fractional laser skin rejuvenation is not suitable for dark skin types.
How is the treatment carried out?
The skin is cleansed before laser treatment commences. The laser beam is then moved over the skin delivering tiny fraxellated beams of light into the skin. Treatment time varies depending upon the skin condition and the area being treated, but will range from 10 to 30 minutes. The skin is cooled with our cryo machine (which blows cold air) both during and after treatment. Protective eyewear must be worn during treatment.
How does the treatment feel?
Fractional laser treatment for acne scarring is very tolerable whilst having the procedure. Heat very quickly develops in the skin but cooling starts as soon as the laser treatment. Fractional laser skin resurfacing is considered very tolerable by most people.
Are there any side effects?
Your skin will be red / pink straight after treatment and will resemble mild sunburn. This can last for a few days post treatment. Mild swelling can occur but tends to resolve in 2-3 days. As your skin heals and renews, you may have a bronzed appearance that lasts from 3-10 days, depending on the treatment level. You skin will naturally exfoliate and may flake as if you had mild sunburn. Other adverse effects are rare but can include temporary pigmentation changes to the skin. For this reason, darker skin types are not suitable for this treatment.
How many factional laser treatments are necessary?
Improvement can be seen after the first session, but for best results, we recommend between 4 to 6 sessions. Treatment is carried out every 2 to 6 weeks, depending upon the level of skin rejuvenation required.
Is the treatment effective?
Yes – the proof is in the photos! As with all our treatments at Laser Skin Solutions, we always take before and after photos of laser acne scarring results. Fractional laser skin resurfacing currently provides the most effective treatment for acne scarring with minimal downtime.
