Laser hair removal is a procedure which removes hair from various parts of the body the body using the light emitted from a laser or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) system. Lasers for permanent hair reduction have been used now for well over a decade, since 1997. The treatment is carried out by directing the laser light on to the skin. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, travels down the hair shaft, heats the hair bulb to around 70 degrees for a split second and disables it at the root. Hair grows in cycles – 3 to be exact. Permanent hair removal can only occur when a hair is lasered in the active ‘anagen’ growth phase. As a result, 6-8 treatments are usually required to achieve the desired amount of hair removal. The before and after effects are staggering, as can be seen from laser hair removal before and after photos

Can anyone be treated for Laser Hair Removal?

Despite many claims by laser clinics, it is not possible to treat very blonde or white or grey hair with lasers. The colour of the hair is essential. Whilst it is true that as technology has advanced, it is now possible to treat lighter coloured hair, it still needs to have a certain amount of pigment in it in order for it to work. The lightest hair colour which can be treated with laser would be dark blonde. As lasers and IPLs work by targeting melanin, it therefore works best on darker hair and pale skin. It is also important that the hair is a good texture, the more coarse the better. It will not work on very blonde, fine, fluffy hair. Different lasers and IPLs are suited to different hair and skin types. Always ensure therefore that your laser clinic in Bournemouth offers a choice of both lasers and IPLs to ensure that you are being treated with whichever system is most appropriate for you, not because it is the only one they happen to have. At Laser Skin Solutions Bournemouth we have medical grade lasers and Intense Pulsed Light systems ensuring you always get the treatment most appropriate for you.
