Onychomycosis, also known as tinea unguium, is an infection of the nails caused by a fungus and is completely referred to as a fungal nail infection. Fungal nail is the most common nail disorder and accounts for half of all nail conditions. Whilst fungal nail can affect both the fingernails and toenails, the fungus will more commonly affect the feet. Symptoms often cause white or yellow nail discolouration, thickening of the nail, and separation of the nail from the nail bed. Whilst fungal nail can affect fingernails, it is more common for toenails to be affected. There have been a number of clinical studies which suggests that the long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser treatment can be used to treat fungal nail infections.
