FAQS

Rosacea is a progressive, inflammatory vascular disorder which primarily affects the central part of the face and is recognised by facial flushing/blushing, facial redness, pustules and thread veins. It rarely affects the scalp, neck, chest or other areas. In severe cases, particularly in men, the soft tissue of the nose may swell, producing bulbous enlargement known as rhinophyma.

Intense Pulsed Light treatment has been shown to be very effective in Rosacea treatment. It works by a process called photothermolysis. This light therapy selectively destroys the abnormal vessels that cause the Rosacea effect, allowing thicker walled micro vessels to be laid down.

FAQS

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea (pronounced “roh-ZAY-sha”) is a common but poorly understood disorder of the facial skin that affects an estimated 8-10 million people in the UK. It is a chronic but treatable condition that primarily affects the central face and is often characterised by flare-ups and remissions. Although Rosacea may develop in many ways and at any age, it typically begins any time after age 30 as a flushing or redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead that may come and go.

What are the symptoms of Rosacea?

Rosacea can vary substantially from one individual to another, and in most cases some rather than all of the potential signs and symptoms appear. The four primary signs of Rosacea are:

  • Flushing or blushing.
  • Persistent redness.
  • Bumps and spots.
  • Thread veins.

Can anyone get Rosacea?

Although Rosacea can affect all segments of the population, individuals with fair skin who tend to flush or blush easily are believed to be at greatest risk. The disorder is more frequently diagnosed in women, but tends to be more severe in men. There is also evidence that rosacea may tend to run in families and appears to be especially prevalent in people of Northern or Eastern European descent.

What causes Rosacea?

There are many theories as to what causes Rosacea – the internet abounds with differing opinions – but none of these have yet been scientifically proven. Many doctors believe that Rosacea may be a vascular disorder due to the frequent flushing and visible thread veins present.

I’ve heard it is possible to trigger Rosacea – is this true?

While it is not possible to cause Rosacea (since it is believed to be largely genetic), it is possible to cause an onset of symptoms and to accelerate this progressive condition.

The most common triggers include but are not limited to, sun exposure, stress, hot or cold weather, excessive exercise, alcohol, and spicy foods. These all have an effect on the thread veins and facial redness present in Rosacea sufferers.

I have Rosacea – what treatments are available?

Because Rosacea can vary considerably from one patient to another, treatments must always be tailored to individual needs. Your doctor or GP will be able to advise you on the various oral and topical medications. Often, a course of anti-biotics followed by on-going topical treatment is recommended. Your doctor will be able to discuss the possible benefits and side effects of prescribed medication.

Intense Pulsed Light is a drug free alternative which has shown to be extremely effective at getting rid of thread veins which cause the Rosacea effect.

How does Intense Pulsed Light work on Rosacea?

People with Rosacea have many facial thread veins which dilate to certain stimuli (eg hot bath or spicy food) and stay open for longer periods of time compared to non-Rosacea sufferers. These thread veins have weaker walls and therefore do not function properly.

Intense Pulsed Light treatment has been shown to be very effective in the treatment of Rosacea. It works by a process called photothermolysis. This light therapy selectively destroys the abnormal vessels (thread veins) that cause the Rosacea effect, allowing thicker walled micro vessels to be laid down.
